Conservative and Surgical Treatment

Treatment begins with a trial of conservative measures in patients with mild symptoms. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, local anesthetic infiltration, and steroid injections around the styloid process may provide temporary relief. Transpharyngeal injection can be both diagnostic and therapeutic, since substantial improvement after anesthesia supports the diagnosis.

The elongated portion of the styloid process is shortened through either an intraoral or an extracervical approach.
